I would appreciate knowing if we have any licensed Ham Radio Operators out there.  If we do, could you kindly advise me, as I am in the process at looking at our options for communication in the remoter areas of the SLRD.

Fraser River Stock Assessment is currently accepting applications for the potential staffing of short-term field technician positions (EG-01 level) to meet emergency needs at short notice for projects within the BC Interior and Lower Fraser Areas. Successful applicants will work under the direction of Stock Assessment supervisors as members of field crews assessing recreational fisheries and enumerating salmon escapements in various locations. Immediate needs are for positions beginning in mid-September; however, it is currently anticipated that opportunities should exist in October.
Duties may include:
  • surveying recreational anglers in the lower Fraser River (Fraser Valley area)
  • counting sockeye, chinook and coho by walking or drifting a stream
  • sampling of salmon for various morphological and biological characteristics such as length, sex, otoliths, scales, and fecundity
  • assisting in Pacific salmon mark-recapture programs
      Ø       capturing sockeye, chinook or coho salmon in the vicinity of spawning areas using beach seines or other appropriate techniques and assisting in the application of Petersen disk tags
      Ø       recovering spawned-out dead salmon to determine numbers with and without tags
  • assisting in the operation of salmon counting fences
  • working in remote field camps
  • assisting in field camp related duties as requested
  • operating small boats and motors

To be considered, applicants must meet the following Merit Criteria:
Essential Qualifications (indicate clearly if you meet the following essential qualifications)
  • Successful completion of secondary school (or PSC approved equivalent)
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License

To be considered, applicants must meet the following Conditions of Employment:
Candidates will be asked to obtain
  • Security Clearance (Reliability Status)
  • Health Canada Medical Clearance (in the form of a Personal Health Declaration)
Candidates must be willing/able to
  • Handle the rigours of strenuous field activities
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Work overtime, weekends and variable hours for continuous duration (4-8 weeks average) as required by operational needs
  • Work in remote locations for extended periods of time
  • Work in and around lakes and swiftwater environments

Preference may be given to candidates that meet the following Merit Criteria:
Asset Qualifications (indicate clearly if you meet the following asset qualifications)
  • Valid First Aid Certification (minimum Level 1 with CPR)
  • CCG Pleasure Craft Operators Card
  • Swift Water Rescue Certification
  • Bear Aware/Encounter Training
